How often do you stop to consider what happens in the sewer system when you flush your toilet, wash dishes, or take a shower? Did you know that we have more than 60 wastewater professionals dedicated to maintaining and operating 700 miles of sewer lines? Or consider that our staff of 40 at the Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Plant work 24/7 to handle and treat more than 25 million gallons of wastewater each day—from the moment it arrives until it’s discharged as clean water into the Charleston Harbor? That’s 9 BILLION gallons of raw sewage each year!
Keeping our customers informed about how we protect the environment and effectively treat wastewater is important. Part of that effort includes voluntarily producing an annual wastewater quality report. Just like our annual drinking water quality report, our wastewater report includes regulatory data and outlines how we perform compared to requirements set by the EPA and SCDHEC under the federal Clean Water Act. This includes regulatory measures on the effluent discharged into the Charleston Harbor, and the number of reportable sanitary sewer overflows that occur in our collection system each year.
Our wastewater report is available each February. You can download it here, or request a hard copy for you or your neighbors by calling us at (843) 727-6800.
